From Fear to Joy-filled Freedom: Choosing JOMO Over FOMO

Writer: CoachTami2.10CoachTami2.10

Have you ever found yourself saying “yes” to something, not because you truly wanted to, but because you were afraid of missing out or messing up? Maybe it was an invitation to a social event that didn’t really excite you, but the angst of what others might think kept you from saying no. Maybe it was scrolling late into the night, afraid you’d miss the latest news, trend, or conversation. Maybe it was adding one more thing to your already full plate because the thought of falling behind felt unbearable. Or maybe it was buying another resource just in case you might need it, but deep down knowing you probably will never use it.

That fear? That’s FOMO—the Fear of Missing Out—and it’s a thief. It steals your peace. It hijacks your time. It pressures you into living a life of reaction instead of intention. It whispers that you are lacking, that you’re behind, that you need to do more, be more, and prove more to be valuable. And if you believe it long enough, you begin living from a place of striving rather than thriving in the fullness of how God uniquely designed you.

But there’s another way—one that leads to rest, rejuvenation, authenticity, freedom, and flourishing. It’s called JOMO—the Joy of Missing Out.

JOMO isn’t about withdrawal or avoidance. It’s about choosing alignment over approval.

It’s about having the courage to say no to what drains you so you can say yes to what truly matters. It’s about trading striving for surrender and comparison for contentment. It’s about believing that because you are God’s masterpiece—designed intentionally, purposefully, and beautifully in Christ—you already have everything you need to live a life of eternal impact, without constantly chasing after what the world says you’re missing.

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) reminds us of this truth:

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”

You don’t have to fight to be valuable—you already are. You don’t have to chase a role, a title, an experience, or a status to prove your worth. Your God-given design is already enough because God Himself declares it so

But walking in JOMO—fully embracing the joy of missing out on what isn't meant for you—requires divine courage, conviction, and confidence.

Proverbs 29:25 warns us of the alternative:

“Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.”

FOMO thrives in fear—fear of what people think, fear of being left out, fear of not measuring up.

But JOMO? JOMO is rooted in courageous trust. It is the deep, unshakable confidence that declares the truth, “God’s plan for me is perfect and good. His design for me is perfectly enough. I don’t need to chase approval, I need only to live aligned to my God-given design.”
